Glorious Fall

Driving on a narrow mountain road
with the sun shining through the brilliant
autumn leaves on both sides was a day to remember.

Take Me Out to the Ball Games.

A huge picture in the gymnasium
at Kamas High School taken
while watching Breanne play volleyball.
Breanne is an awesome volleyball player.
She is a sophomore, but plays on the varsity team.
Liz called one Thurs. morning and told me
to leave within the hour and I would
be able to visit with Mike at noon
while she cut his hair. I could play
with Sutton, because she was tending him.
I could see Breanne play volleyball that night
with Rylee as a cheerleader.
Friday night I could go with Mike's family to
Roosevelt and watch Rylee cheer at a football game.
Sat. morning I could attend a volleyball game where
Jade played. Then I could watch Logan play football and then I
could cheer for Mason at his football game.
SO I DID.
~~~
I've discovered something about myself.
I am a real football fan,
but
I don't like to watch my grandsons
play and get roughed up.
Sweet Music from My Kitchen.
It's music to my ears when I hear my
canning jars seal with a 'pop'.
Years ago for Christmas Santa brought me
a blue aligator skin covered box.
It was a record player. One of the
records was the story of the
"Grasshopper and the Ants".
I've been thinking about this lately and how
many of the animals are smart enough
to prepare for the winter.
Banana Sour-Cream Muffins
These are a favorite.
I like to place the muffin tin with the filled paper cups (unbaked) in the freezer.
When frozen put filled baking cups in an air tight freezer bag
and return to freezer.
Freeze up to 3 months.
To bake - return frozen cups to muffin tin.
Bake as directed below, increasing baking time by 5 min.
Oh my, the house smells so good in the morning.
1/2 cup butter
(room temperature)
1-1/4 cups sugar
2 eggs
1/4 cup sour cream
1 tsp. baking soda
2 bananas, mashed
1-1/2 cups flour
1 tsp. vanilla
1/2 tsp. salt
350 oven. Line muffin tin with paper baking cups.
Cream butter and sugar. Add eggs; beat well. Stir in next 5 ingredients.
Fill muffin tins 2/3 full.
Bake 20 to 25 minutes or until tops spring back when lightly touched.
Family Fun.
Barbeques and Pizza parties were enjoyed with the family this week. K & J enjoyed driving to the beautiful Logan area on business. Spencer and Lynzie spent the day with grandma playing games, having a yummy, fresh garden lunch, browsing through the dollar store and going for ice cream with grandpa. The Dallas bunch spent two days in Vernal. Then the Dallas, Vernal and Provo bunch spent a fun in the sun day at Seven Peaks. The BIG NEWS is the Texans are considering moving closer to family. We hope it can happen soon.
Fun with Jade - Wed.. Aug 5th.
Today was a sewing day.
She sewed a little pillow and
a "Leavin's Doll"which is a pioneer doll.
Part of the poem that comes with the doll says -
"A Leavin's Doll, "A Leavin's Doll"
A doll that is little remembered.
Made more of love than anything else
For a child that was not pampered.
She was made from the 'leavin's' or scraps of cloth,
And stuffed with cotton or fluff.
A face may be drawn and tied with a string
Then wrapped in some calico stuff.
After sewing we had fun running around
and doing some errands.
She went swimming with Jenae and Kathryn.
The pool was cleared shortly after
because of a lightning storm.
After work grandpa helped her fix the back bike tire.
She about did it all herself.
We ate at Carl's Jr. She played in the play area with
seven little children who came a little above her waist.
She had a blast.
She introduced me to the game "Bejeweled".
That was a mistake.
A Fun Tuesday with Jade.
Many orphanages overseas are completely white. White bare walls, workers and babies dressed in white. To add some color to stimulate their lives and brains, a humanitarian project is colorful little boxes with bells inside for the babies to rattle. Jade chose to make these boxes with love and red and yellow yarn for those sweet babies.
For her art class today she gathered herbs around Sister Pratt's yard. Then hung them upside down to dry. She made a Plaster of Paris rose picture, but wasn't happy with the results. The picture below is a chalk and water color picture. It was a fun technique.
She was introduced to a fresh lime drink. (That was an experience.) She was introduced to a favorite raspberry cheesecake sundae. (Surprize) She didn't enjoy it. Grandpa taught her to fix the bike tire. She enjoyed riding the bike in the evening with strict instructions where she could go. At one point her loving grandparents followed her around the block in the car.
(She loved that. ha, ha).
Hanging Out with Jade This Week.
While Breanne is at Volley ball camp this week,
Jade is partying with me.
At noon we ate lunch at Sizzler.
There was grandpa, Liz, Caty, Jade and me.
Jenae and Kathryn were recuperating
from their trip and didn't make it.
After lunch Rylee met us at my house and
then Liz, Katy and Rylee went to Vernal.
I took a short nap while Jade enjoyed some art work.
She drew a guinea pig for Rylee.
Rylee requested it.
Jade and I are both list makers.
We combined and decided on our outings
and projects for the week.
Went to the pet store.
Jade took many pictures.
Next we wandered the mall.
Jade ate a yummy chocolate dipped cone.
I had a piece of pizza.
On to the Pioneer Village for our Family Home Evening.
A guide took us and another family around.
It was very informative and interesting.
We played some pioneer games.
We stopped on the way home at Taco Amigo's.
Jade ate supper, while I sipped a drink.
A quick stop at the store for milk, yarn and
a favorite breakfast cereal for Jade.
Went to my friend Ruth's house
to introduce her to Jade.
Jade will have an art class with her today.
At home we read and laughed at the blog.
We realized it was 10:30.
Off to bed we went.
Were their deeds of ev'ry day.
A Remarkable Lady.
Janice Kapp Perry
Last night I watched a program on the life of Sister Perry.
It really made an impression on me.
She is a beautiful person with the Spirit as her companion
for help and insights into her writing.
I started checking the internet and was amazed
how many of her songs I was familiar with.
Our family has used her songs to tell a message.
One Mother's Day the girls and I sang,
"At Their Mother's Knee".
At a missionary farewell we sang, "No Ordinary Man",
and the grandchildren and their mothers sang,
" A Child's prayer" at Steve's funeral.
She has had trials and tests in her life.
I was impressed with her insights and the way she
viewed and handled them.
She is a remarkable lady who has inspired me.
FHE: Gratitude
Excerpts from a lesson in the L.D.S. Living Magazine.
Conference Talk: "Finding Joy in the Journey," by Thomas S. Monson has more information on this topic.
What did Alma and his people remember to do after being delivered from bondage? Read Mosiah 24:21-22.
Why is is important to show gratitude? See D&C 59:21
Ask each family member to suggest a way to show more gratitude in your family and to Heavenly Father for your blessings.
Story:
A rancher in Kamas, at the base of Utah's Uinta mountains, decided he wanted to sell his ranch. He hired a real estate agent, who came out to inspect his property and write up an ad.
Later the realtor called the rancher to go over the ad copy with him before placing it in the paper. "For sale." read the realtor, "Picturesque white frame ranch house with white picket fence and eighty acres of rich farmland in the middle of beautiful Kamas Valley. Clear streams of mountain water flow nearby, well stocked with rainbow trout. House faces rugged mountain peaks and is located in a small, friendly farming community with good schools and a new church."
"Stop!" said the rancher. "The deal's off! This is the kind of place I've wanted all my life!"
(Richard Nash, Lengthen Your Smile, [Salt Lake City: Shadow Mountain, 1996], 205)
Lesson on gratitude for what we have, for the service of others, and to our God.
Just Returned from a Fun Festive Wedding.
It was the first Spanish wedding I've attended.
They really know how to party.
Next time maybe I'll have a Spanish wedding.
I went alone about 7:30.
I sat at a table with Vaughan & Sheryle Austin,
Ron & Robbin Clegg, Teresa Griffin, Deanne
Helquist, Suzanne Hall, Anna Winkel and
Natalie Rhea. I enjoyed the evening.
No clouds, no rain today.
First day in weeks it was sunny all day.
I spent most of the day in the garden.
I nearly wiped out two squash plants trying
to maneuver the tiller around, but I did make
a difference. There are less weeds. It looks much better.
Spent some time organizing pictures. Fun to
see events I'd forgotten about. I love those precious
little children and grandchildren in those pictures.
Time goes by so fast. Sometimes it would be fun to go
back and hold and talk to them when they were little
again, but of course I enjoy them now too.
So thankful for the pictures to bring back those memories.
I enjoyed spending time in the Temple this morning.
This afternoon I drove this Smart Car.
I liked it.
Do Smart people drive Smart Cars?
Did some shopping and weeded the garden
in the cool of the evening.
Sweet Dreams.
A Good Day.
Sept. 2008
Tonight the rain is falling softly. I'm relaxing in my blue nightgown and fluffy slippers. The night is quiet. I feel relaxed. It is a perfect night to sleep with the window open and feel the gentle, cool breeze.
My day started out by cleaning the study. I still need to sort through some boxes, but the study is cleaned out. It feels and looks good. At noon Clark called for me to meet him and dad for lunch. It is always fun to be with Clark. He is a happening guy. He kept us entertained with his stories of his experiences at Sundance. I look forward to his arrival, but his time here seems to pass too quickly. He started packing up gear and sending it back today. He will be finished Sunday or Monday. He wants to feel the freedom of a short trip across the State in the convertible and then flies home the next week-end.
This afternoon a friend installed a new software system to help organize and manage my pictures. I've been working with the pictures already on my computer and it looks like a good system.
This evening I went to a Pressure Cooking Class at Macey's Market. Garlic Pot Roast and Vegetables, Four Cheese Italian Risotto, and Carrots Tropicana were cooked right before our very eyes. It was delicious. Pressure cooking saves time and electricity. I was impressed when she explained that using one cylinder of propane and a preparedness stove, will cook meals for three weeks with a pressure cooker. That would be great way to cook if the electricity were down.
Lights out for now. There will be more adventures tomorrow.
It's Just Plain Animal Abuse !
Poor K-Sunn.
May 9th, our 4-H girls had a lovely Mother's Day Brunch
for their mothers.
They made decorations, cards and prepared the food.
Somehow after,
we ended up across the street where we each had a ride
on Pat Hansen's horse.
It was a hoot to get me on that horse.
I've never had a Mother's Day week-end like this before.
Later in the day I went to the big V,
and spent special time with families there,
and new baby Sutton.
Sunday, I enjoyed church and a super delish B. B. Q.
with our family and Craig's family.
Life is good.
I enjoy the unexpected experiences.
This Seemed Like the Longest Day.
I worked around the house this morning,
4th of July '99
and organized a box of pictures to distribute to the family. I looked at the clock at 1:15 and expected it to be 5:30. It seemed like the day was really dragging. I did find this hammock picture that I was thinking about. I realized that my hammock isn't like C & D's. Mine is the cotton rope style.
There swings some of my greatest blessings. That was a fun stage of life. The cousins have had such fun together. They still do in their teen years. They have protective uncles that love, are concerned, and set good examples for them. The uncles always make it fun when we get together.
Low called just before 2 p.m. and wanted to ride to Heber. He was stranded in his office for about 15 minutes because of rain. It was one of the strongest downpours we have ever seen. In Heber we shopped and ate our lunch in the car at the park. We noticed an old beat up yellow truck parked with the lights on. We decided my good deed for the day was to alert the owner. After explaining the situation to the woman who answered the door, who was about my age, I mentioned what a lovely yard she had. She replied, "Oh, you should see the backyard". While Low talked to her husband, who recently retired from working at a power plant where they had lived "on the mountain" for years, I had a delightful tour and visit with her. It was a small yard. She has a knack for creating out of the unexpected. She mentioned she has won awards for her landscaping. She invited me three or four times to bring some friends and visit her again. She wants us to enjoy her yard and to see what she has done inside her little home. Which I am looking forward to .
Blessings to all . . . and to all a good night.
4-H Day Camp at Canyon Glen.
It was a glorious day to be in Provo canyon this morning. It was beautiful and refreshing. The camp started at 9 a.m. The theme was "Cowboys & Indians". We were divided in groups with war paint on our cheeks. We were the white group. There were six classes that changed every 20 minutes with a lunch break between the 4th and 5th class.
Our first class was archery. It was mainly about safety.
The kids had some hands on experience and
shot four or more arrows.
Many of them hitting the target.
Next was a teepee making class.
Little sticks and a hot glue gun were needed for this project.
The third class we made "Cow Pies".
Each of us put 1/2 c. powdered sugar, 2 tsp. cocoa, 1 T. butter, 1 T. cream cheese
and 1/4 tsp. vanilla into a plastic baggie.
We worked it with our fingers until it was a rich creamy chocolate brown.
Squished it to a corner of the baggie. Cut a little
hole in that corner. Squished it into our mouths.
It was a yummy camping treat.
Beaded necklaces and bracelets were then made.
The fifth class was tie dye bandannas.
Outdoor games were played for the last group activity.
There were 6 different groups and everyone including me
had fun at summer camp.
I'm glad I went.
An Errand Day.
Low needed a ride home from dropping off the red truck to Steve Whitlocks. After I picked him up, we ate at Chuck -a -Rama, shopped at Costco, the Good Earth and the Real Food Market.
When Clark & Dee lived with me years ago, they had a hammock in the backyard. All the family enjoyed it and since they left with their hammock I've missed being able to swing lazily in the cool of the summer evenings. I have wanted to buy one for a couple of years, but couldn't find one. Yesterday in the paper Cabella's had a hammock sale. Low and I rode to the point of the mountain this afternoon and now I am the proud owner of one that looks like Clarks. There is an old family photo of Dave, some of the grandchildren and some of the neighbor kids all on the hammock one summer afternoon. I need to find that picture.
We are having the wettest June ever. Everyday this past week it has rained. The forecast is for storms to keep rolling in this next week. This evening is a bit chilly so I have my winter blue flannel snowmen P.J.s on. They feel warm and comforting.
I have felt blessed today. The day is winding down with a beautiful double rainbow seen from the back porch. Til tomorrow . . .
Fun on our Trip to Zion's Canyon.
Last week end we ate at a very swanky restaurant in Springdale just outside of Zions Canyon. While waiting for everyone to gather in the lobby after we ate, we had Lowry take two pictures of us. We smiled in one and the other we posed as the Indian in back of us. After we arrived home, Lowry was sorting through his pictures on his camera. When he came to the stoic Indian faced picture of us, he thought it was terrible because no one was smiling and he deleted it. He didn't understand what we were doing.
The picture was hilarious. We all looked just like the statue.
Finished in Time for the Return of Winter.
" Turning Twenty Quilt"
It has warm batting inside and soft "minkie" on the back.
I'm lovin' it these cold, rainy, snowy days.
Liz has made two of these quilts. She helped me with this quilt and showed me some tricks to make the next one easier. Craig's niece quilted it on a big quilting machine where she works. It was a fun project and I appreciate Liz and Makenzie.
I Like to Eat! I Really "Dig" My Food!
The Lowly Potato - You can slice it, dice it, peel it, shred it, mash it, or leave it whole.
You can boil it in water, fry it in a pan, bake it in the oven,
cook it in a crock pot, or roast it in a fire pit.
A fantastic, versatile, economical food for late summer, fall and winter meals.
Write down 5 or so of your favorite recipes with potatoes. Decide how many times you want to eat them in the next three months. Figure what ingredients you will need and have your pantry stocked with them. Walaa, you have taken a step toward having your 3 months supply of food.
Two of my fast food meals were a micro-waved baked potato with chili, cheese and a dollop of yogurt on top and Potato Pancakes, a recipe of my Aunt Lou Jeans.
Our Stake President at Stake Conference Sunday gave us "A Call to Action" to get our 3 months supply of food. Let's go for it!!!
Did You Know!!!
St. George, Utah was named in honor of Mormon Apostle George A. Smith, also known as the "Potato Saint" because he urged early settlers to eat raw, unpeeled potatoes to cure scurvy. This saved many pioneers from sickness and death.
Scurvy is caused by a lack of vitamin C. It was common among sailors and other people deprived of fresh fruits and vegetables for long periods of time.
Isn't it wonderful that our Heavenly Father has made available to us various ways of meeting our needs. When citrus fruits can't be shipped in from florida or fruits and vegetables can't be grown in the frozen snow, there are other ways to get our vitamin C.
Another Birthday!!! May They Continue.
As I lay in bed this morning, I thought about my mother. The excitement and relief she felt after a healthy baby's arrival. She told me the first thing she did was check if I had all my fingers and toes. I thought of her constant care, guidance and some of the fun times we've shared. I'd love to be able to talk to her today.
I flipped the covers off, swung my legs over the edge of the bed and sat there feeling like Punxsutawney Phil. Feb. 7th is my Groundhog Day. I wonder what the forecast is for this next year for me? Thinking of the past year, my conclusion is, it was a very good year.
A Fistfull of Saved Dollars.
A neat lady, who lives in Australia, invited her readers to share ideas of their best, quick, meals from scratch. She posted these ideas and recipes on the 19th of Dec. 2008. Her post is, down---to---earth.blogspot.com. My quick and easy meals have been to pick up fast food while running errands or when I didn't want to bother with fixing something in the evenings I would go out and get a fast food meal. Yet, I was aware how that money added up at the end of the week and health wise it was a poor decision. It has been three weeks since I have changed this eating away from home habit. The first week I ate entirely from my storage food. I didn't spend a penny. Only once in these three weeks have I had lunch away from home. That was when Liz came into town and we ate at Sizzler. I figure I have saved a fistful of dollars which I have used to add to my storage supplies. My meals have been more nutritious being less processed and containing less preservatives and chemicals. I've become more aware of what I need to do for better preparations for my three months storage meals and beyond. I've learned the value of stocking the refrigerator with homemade yogurt, home grown sprouts, cooked rice or a variety of meal basics that make meals in minutes. The stored foods in the freezer are big bonuses for eating at home and I am looking forward to having a garden for the third year.
I'm interested in any one's quick fixin ideas.
Family Web Page Class in Relief Society.
On the 27th of January, Brother Winkel will give us ideas on establishing a family web page. This page will be used to connect us to our extended family by sharing family history information, biographies, missionary and family reunion info and more.
This website would be a blessing for us and our extended family members. It would eliminate time at the copy center, the expense of copies, and the time and expense of mailing histories and information to all those who are interested. Sounds great to me and I'm exited to learn more about it.
I'll keep you posted.
Breakfast with Christi Five Days a Week.
Christi is a L.C.S.W. (Licensed Clinical Social Worker).
She receives a discount on her Health Care Plan,
if she stays physically fit.
This last year her cholesterol dropped 50 points.
She attributes this to her breakfast routine.
She mixes uncooked oatmeal with her yogurt and adds
a banana, an apple, or berries.
No Picture on This Post !!!
I am having an allergic reaction to something. I know not what. It started late Sunday afternoon. My eyes are red, puffy and my eye lids itch. Under my eyes to the end of my nose is red and I can feel small bumps. My ears feel warm and they itch. I wore dark glasses late yesterday afternoon and ran a few errands. It felt good to get out of the house. The discomfort is easing alittle. Ahhhh, this too will pass.
Y'all enjoy your day without red puffy eyes and warm itchy ears, ya hear!
I loves ya, Jean
I Went to a Fun and Informative Quilt Meeting at Marilyn Steele's Home.
Lament of the Quilter's Husband
She learned to quilt on Monday,
Her stitches were so very fine.
She forgot to thaw out dinner,
So we went out to dine.
She quilted miniatures on Tuesday,
She says they are a must.
They really were quilt lovely,
But she forgot to dust.
On Wednesday it was a sampler,
She says the stipplings fun.
What highlights! Oh what shadows!
But the laundry wasn't done.
Her charm quilt was on Thursday,
Green patches, blue and red.
I guess she really was engrossed,
She never made the bed.
It was wall hanngings on Friday,
In colors she adores.
But she never seemed to notice,
The crumbs on all the floors.
I found a maid on Saturday,
My week is now complete,
My wife can quilt the hours away,
The house will still look neat.
Well it's already Sunday,
I think I'm about to wilt.
I cussed, I raved, I ranted,
The maid has learned to quilt.
They Will Be Blessed Because They Bless Me.
Our course of study in Sunday School this year is the Doctrine and Covenants. I am taking this seriously and doing some extra reading. It has been very interesting and this book is to be taken seriously.
D&C 1:10 states - Unto the day when the Lord shall come to recompense unto every man according to his work, and measure to every man according to the measure which he has measured to his fellow man.
It has snowed constantly for two days now. This morning at 9:30 Bob was over and cleaned the walks and driveway. At 4:00 this afternoon I noticed a red truck in the driveway. Someone was clearing my walks and driveway with his snowblower. I did not recognize him. This evening, I heard Sable, the Lund's dog, barking. Looking out the window, I saw Brother Winkel with a group of young men again clearing the driveway, walks and porches.
Good, good people live all around me. This is just one day's blessings. Yet, everyday I am blessed by them.
I wish the rest of the world understood this principle and acted kindly and cared for each other.
Great news for Everett.
He has moved to phase two and is able to enjoy one hour in twenty four without his harness.
How beautiful a day can be
when kindness touches it!
A LESSON ON GOALS.
I was dressed in dad's buckskin jacket.
I wore Bridger Dain's coonskin cap.
I carried dad's muzzleloading rifle.
"I'm in pursuit - in HOT pursuit.
I've pursued that darn deer relentlessly for several days now, but he's soooo evasive.
I've LEARNED a good lesson during this hunt. I'll share it with you so you won't have the same HEART - WRENCHING experience I've had.
Picture This -
I was sitting on the highest mountain peak in Utah overlooking a luscious green meadow. Out from behind a huge boulder came the most beautiful 10 point buck you will ever hope to see.
It was a thrill to aim and get that buckskin in my sights. I aimed and aimed and aimed real good. He just stood and looked at me.
Now, I hate to brag or boast or make anybody bitter at me, but, I AM THE CHAMP. I am the most wild, wide-eyed woman aimer west of Winimmucca.
After aiming at him and him looking at me for about 15 minutes, he slowly turned and walked away.
Update on Everett
Everett was born with his left hip staying out of the socket. His right hip would slip in and out. He was to wear this brace for 24/7 the first week. Madison was unable to change his clothes other than his diaper. The second week, he was suppose to wear the brace for 23 hours. He could have an hour out of the brace to enjoy a bath and change of clothes. The third week, the brace was to be worn for sleeping and naps only. This was to continue for 6 to 8 weeks.
The second week sonogram showed things were progressing very well, BUT, the Dr. decided it would be wise to keep on the 24/7 schedule for another week. Madison takes Everett in tomorrow for another sonogram and I will update this post after their visit.
